5 Stars but I wish the handle was different
I’m a very happy with my HEATHER from the second best sale. A small, small blemish is on the side wall and does not interfere with cooking in any way. I have a few other cast iron pans and treated myself to this pan. I’m so glad I did. My one complaint is with the handle. The underside is concave and is somewhat of a tiny annoyance to clean and keep properly seasoned. Also, it doesn’t feel as smooth in the hand as if it were rounded and filled in. Still five stars.
Perfect level of polish, cooks amazingly!
Lots of similarly priced competitors, but no one has the surface finishing of BP. Just the slightest bit of soft texture to hold seasoning, but not the cratered mess of modern castings. Thicker bottom than peers, holds more heat. Cast iron is not "even" heat - heat spreads unevenly through this insulator. Cast iron gives you STEADY heat over time once it's well preheated. The thick bottom of BP helps do this even better! Pour spouts are helpful, and the depth is great. Handle needs a cover to be useful.
Second best hmmm…
I was intrigued by the second best sale of the Heather and got my first pan from butter pat that way. I was expecting visual defects that would not impact cooking capabiluty, but when I got the pan with a small but seemingly deep cavity (air bubble during casting process) smack in the middle of the cooking surface I was surprised that that would even be sold as second best. Wonder if that cavity will either fill up with gunk over time or if there’s even a risk of it turning into a hole from heat stress that would make the pan unusable. It works so far and I love the smooth surface of the pan, but am holding my breath about that cavity.
Beautiful piece of cast iron
I’ve got almost 100 cast iron pans and this one cooks with the best of my vintage ones , love it and will definitely be buying other sizes
When shopping at the Butterpat site while the second sale was on, I read all the reviews. I was a little concerned. I own Griswald, Field, Stargazer, and Lodge. If I purchased this pan, would it wobble all over my stove, I was not concerned about the cosmetic flaws other than that. After all, it’s a second. Butterpat said it would cook fine. When it came, I was more than surprised. It’s a beautiful piece of cast iron. It’s perfectly flat. Nothing sticks! I mean nothing! Eggs, burgers, steak. Cleaning the Heather was a breeze. Very smooth finish. I fell in love, and ordered the Estee. Can’t wait for the next sale. If you’re on the fence about buying a Butterpat, don’t be. Expensive? It’s the top of the line cast iron. Perfect or seconds, you’ll be glad you made the purchase
